Tips for effectively correcting employee errors?

?

Delivering correction on employee errors can make or break an employee relationship. Here are a few tips to ensure that feedback to your employee's errors are effective, but still well received.?

?

Use the 5 why's method: The 5 Whys method was developed by Toyota as a way to explore deeper reasons why mistakes happen. When a problem occurs, you drill down to its root cause by asking "Why?"?five times.?Then, when a counter-measure becomes apparent, you follow it through to prevent the issue from recurring.?

?

  • The driver was late. Why??

  • He was late because he had a flat tire.? Why??

  • The tire was flat because it was worn out.? Why??

  • The tire was worn out because it hadn't been changed when it was supposed to.? Why??

  • The tire wasn't changed because the vehicle had not been inspected.? Why??

  • The vehicle was not inspected because employees were not given training on vehicle inspections.?

?

Think ahead about what to say: It can be frusturating to deal with the consequences of a mistake you did not make. It is important to plan feedback and know what you need to say before going to an employee. Remember – the goal isn't to demoralize them with anger, but to make sure the mistake does not happen again.??

?

Involve the employee in the solution: When you go to an employee to correct an error, involving them in problem solving that error can feel more confident they truly understand what went wrong and how to fix it, rather than just telling them.?
